Analysing Horror Trailers 3 - 'Midsommar'
The final trailer I am going to analyse in terms of horror film conventions is for the film 'Midsommar'.
The trailer for 'Midsommar' contains the following horror film conventions:
- Production company ident from company associated with making films from the horror genre (A24)
- Sinister non-diegetic music
- Iconography typical of the 'folk-horror' sub-genre
- Font typical of the genre (serif, ancient)
- Title card featuring director associated with making films from the genre (Ari Aster)
- Slow zooms to create tension and suspense
- Title cards reference other films from the genre ('Hereditary')
- Fades to black
- Low-key lighting
- Bird's-eye-view shots, typical of the genre (suggesting events are out of the characters' control)
- Isolated setting (woods in Sweden)
- Typical storyline of the folk-horror sub-genre - city interloper drawn into a weird pagan cult
- Impact sounds to unsettle the audience
- Scenes of horror (blood, sacrifice)
