Analysing Horror Trailers 3 - 'Midsommar'

The final trailer I am going to analyse in terms of horror film conventions is for the film 'Midsommar'.

The trailer for 'Midsommar' contains the following horror film conventions:
  • Production company ident from company associated with making films from the horror genre (A24)
  • Sinister non-diegetic music
  • Iconography typical of the 'folk-horror' sub-genre
  • Font typical of the genre (serif, ancient)
  • Title card featuring director associated with making films from the genre (Ari Aster)
  • Slow zooms to create tension and suspense
  • Title cards reference other films from the genre ('Hereditary')
  • Fades to black
  • Low-key lighting
  • Bird's-eye-view shots, typical of the genre (suggesting events are out of the characters' control)
  • Isolated setting (woods in Sweden)
  • Typical storyline of the folk-horror sub-genre - city interloper drawn into a weird pagan cult
  • Impact sounds to unsettle the audience
  • Scenes of horror (blood, sacrifice)
