Font Research for My Trailer and Poster Titles
I need to choose a font for my titles that is appropriate for the horror genre. I have some ideas of the styles of font I would like to use having looked at a number of title sequences for horror movies and by looking at the fonts used in horror film marketing campaigns, but first I am going to look at a range of font websites, considering the pros and cons of using those sites to help me find the best font to use.
The first website I am looking at is Linotype.
This website discusses font licensing, font design and font technology. The website also sells fonts.
Here are the pros and cons of the website.
Pros:
- Gives you information on the font
- Shows you the font on a poster and on letters
Cons:
- Hard to navigate
- Only have fonts for older movies (up until 2013)
- They are not available for free
Next site I looked at was Font Meme.
This website divides fonts into categories, such as movies, TV show, albums and brands. It also sub-divides fonts further by genre, including for horror films and TV shows.
Here are the pros and cons of this website.
Pros:
- Has a wide range of fonts
- Fonts are categorised by genre
- Easy to navigate because of clear categories
Cons:
- You are charged for the fonts
Then I looked at a site called Fontyuckle.
This website has many different downloadable fonts.
Pros:
- Has a wide range of fonts
- Fonts are free to download
Cons:
- Fonts are not divided by genre/category
- You have to know the name of the font to access it
Lastly, I looked at Dafont.
This website uses key words to organise their fonts, including categories that will be useful for horror films.
Pros:
- Easy to navigate through key words and genre
- All fonts are free
- Can search for specific fonts
- Can try out the title of your film in each font
- Searching is very time-consuming because there are so many fonts
